JV Energy Solutions and Van Dijk heating proud of their part in Pure Flavor’s new building

Jan Voshol: “You have to be able to trust the heating and cooling system blindly”

Pure Flavor spreading its wings across North America. Last year the fruit vegetable producer based in Leamington, Ontario built a new greenhouse measuring 15 hectares (37 acres), flanked by a 17,000 m2 (4 acres) packing facility. JV Energy Solutions Inc. from nearby Kingsville installed the heating and cooling system, partly supplied by Van Dijk heating. Jan Voshol is proud of the order for one of his loyal customers.

Pure Flavor is one of the larger producers of fruit vegetables in North America and invests heavily in business growth and takeovers, both in Canada and the United States. The product range includes a wide assortment of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers found on the shelves of retailers under different brand names.

Robust products, good service

“A fantastic and worthy project, for a long-standing customer of ours,” says Voshol, who sees ever-increasing demand for his services in North America. “Loyalty is extremely valuable, provided this is perceived by both sides. For this to happen, we need to ensure we deliver a high-quality job for every project and provide a good service because the customer has to be able to rely blindly on the heating and cooling system. This is why we have been working with Van Dijk Heating for decades. They manufacture durable equipment that operates well and with good reliability. And if there are any issues, it quickly gets resolved.”

Condenser and CO2 dosing

The heating system at the new nursery in Leamington is fairly conventional. Three gas-fired TK-Top boilers with a combined capacity of 35 MW of thermal energy supply the 15-hectare greenhouses with heat and CO2. The flue gases are cooled by the latest model of VDH condenser which has ASME accreditation for the North American market.

The cooled flue gases are then distributed via two VDH CO2dosing units spread across the greenhouses. “The fans each have a capacity of 37 kW, which is ample for an even distribution over 8 hectares of cultivation space,” states Voshol.

ECOSTER drain water disinfectors

Van Dijk Heating is also providing two ECOSTER drain water disinfectors that are supplied with hot water from the boilers. Each has a disinfection capacity of 40 m3 per hour and this is also ample to meet the company’s needs.

“Heating is a tried and tested disinfection method,” explains the entrepreneur with installation companies in the Netherlands and Canada. “A few years ago, Van Dijk carried out an independent investigation to see if ECOSTER also destroys viruses such as ToBRFV and cucumber green mottle mosaic virus, and this heater has successfully done so. Therefore, we fully support this option.”

Long relationship

On behalf of the management team of Van Dijk heating, Joek van der Zeeuw says he is equally as excited about the project as Jan Voshol, with whom the company has had a good relationship for decades. “We’re certainly very proud of it. We know and understand one another so well by now that we’re on the same wavelength,” he remarks. “Nevertheless, it is important for all parties that all criteria, specifications and agreements are properly set out. This stops any misunderstandings from occurring and ensures that all of us, including the user, know what we can expect of one another.”
